Abstract:
C3, C4 and CAM pathways are tha major types of photosynthetic CO2 fixation among terrestrial vascular plants. Each species possess only one of these mechanism, and this information is fundamental for the understanding of the species' ecophysiological and ecological performances. In this database we consider the KISKUN flora and give the following information for those species, where the photosynthetic type can be unambiguously determined.
Purpose:
Provide background information on the species' carbon metabolism to have a better understanding of the species' ecology and ecophysiology

One photosynthetic pathway type (PPT) is assigned to each species, and this variable is a constant for the species. PPT was determined by using at least two of the following tests: 1) leaf anatomy (presence or absence of Kranz structure); 2) stable carbon isotope ratio (d13C value); 3) photosynthetic CO2 compensation point; 4) taxonomic information (PPT of closely related species).

Methodology_Description:
Plant material (shoots or leaves) were collected in the field or plants were raised from seeds in controlled environment. Leaf anatomy was studied on leaf blade cross sections by using a light microscope with 200-570x magnification and - if needed - metilen blue or lugol staining was applied. Stable carbon isotope ratio d13C was determined using a Finigan MAT mass spectrometer with a PDB standard. Photosynthetic CO2 compensation pont was measured for three-to-five replicates per species on leaves by measuring leaf CO2 gas exchange using an ADC LCA2 infrared gas analyser.
